Chapter 14

Hank kept his word, they both worked tirelessly trying to find out who was threatening Bo. Nothing was coming up. Nora tried to keep away from Bo, the pain too much for her to handle. She knew he was mess, Hank saw him everyday.

“He doesn’t understand Nora, he is in pain. He just wants you home.”
Nora had to fight everyday not to go running home to him. But she couldn’t, she had gotten called a few times reminding her what was at stake. She and Hank tried to track the calls, but nothing came up. Her anxiety grew as she was approaching her due date.

Today she was heading to the courthouse. She walked into the hallway and felt her stomach flip. Bo was in the hall talking to a lawyer. She tried to hide, but he turned and saw her. Their eyes meet. Nora nearly cried, so much pain in his eyes.  He looked horrible, unshaved, clothes disheveled, hair all over the place. He walked over to her quickly.

“Red.”
She looked down.

“Hi Bo.”
She could feel his scrutiny.

“You look beautiful. The baby doing okay?”
“Yeah, the baby is doing great, should be making their appearance soon.”
“I am sure it will be a beautiful baby.”
“Thank you. Umm I need to get going.”
She started to walk away, Bo grabbed her arm.

“Wait. Um, how are you?”
“Fine.”
She felt the knot in her stomach grow as she lied to him.

“You still at Hank’s?”
“Yeah, until the baby is born, I felt that would be easiest.”
“Umm, just one more thing. Is it okay if I come over and see the baby when it is born?”
Nora looked up at him, trying to control her tears. His face looking so hopeful. But she knew she had to hurt him again.

“I..I don’t know Bo. I don’t think you and I should have much contact.”
She saw his face fall, she couldn’t take this, she just kept breaking his heart over and over. She quickly walked away, not able to look at what she had just done to the man she loved. She found the bathroom and ran inside. She quickly locked the door and began to sob. Her own heart breaking even more. Her phone started to ring, she took a few deep breath and answered.

“Good girl, that is what we like to see.”
Nora stood straighter.

“You saw that? Who are you?”
They hung up.

Nora ran out the bathroom and looked around, nobody out of the ordinary was around. Was this someone her and Bo knew? If so, why would they ever want to hurt them like this?

She wiped her face, she needed to get to the courtroom. She quickly walked there, but her mind was on what had just happened.

Nora walked into Hank’s office. He’s face looked very serious.

“Nora, we need to tell him.”
“No, not yet.”
“Nora, what little hope that man had left was crushed by you today.”
Nora looked down at her hands that were laying on her stomach.

“I know.” She felt her tears start again. “It was so horrible Hank. I actually hate myself. All he wanted was to see the baby and I had to break his heart again.”

“Nora tell him.”
“NO! Someone near is watching us, I can’t risk his life!”

“Nora, his life is meaningless without you and this baby, I am worried what he’ll do.”
Nora’s head snapped up, panic filled her.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, I think he is suicidal.”
“No, he wouldn’t.”
“Nora he lost you and this baby, you told him he couldn’t even see the baby today. The man is losing hope in everything.”

“I know. I want to run to him Hank, but I can’t. Please help him Hank, we are so close to getting this guy.”
“No we are not.”
“They called today, two seconds after Bo and I talked. She knew! Someone near me is part of this. Hank we need the courthouse surveillance tape, I bet they are on that tape.”
Hank sighed.

“Fine, but Nora if they doesn’t bring up anything we need to tell him, even it means you and Bo leave town with different identities.”
“Okay.”
Hank walked over to her and hugged her.

“It is almost over Nora, one way or the other.”

She dared not let her heart believe that.
