To Protect and Serve Chapter 10

Chapter 10
Bo woke to a great deal of pain ripping through his body. He tried to focus, he realized he was in the hospital. He remembered, he tried to get up then he realized he was hooked to a bunch of machines and a feeding tube in his mouth. He felt around until he found the nurse button he painfully pushed the button. A minute later a nurse showed up.
“Oh Mr. Buchanan you’re awake, let me get the doctor to remove your tube. Try to stay calm and don’t speak ok?”
Bo nodded in understanding. He waited for the doctor. She finally showed up.
“Ah so good to see you awake, let’s get that tube out.”
A couple minutes later Bo was free of the tube, he throat hurt.
“You are looking good Mr. Buchanan for a man shot in the stomach. You still have a long recuperation.”
He tried to speak, but came out as a croak that nobody could really hear.
“Nora?”
“Mr. Buchanan you should talk for another 24 hours. You’ve been in ICU for about 2 weeks, it was very touch and go.”
There was some loud beeping going off.
“I’ll be right back Mr. Buchanan.”
The doctor left. Bo pain was horrible, the nurse came over with some ice chips.
“You’ll want these for your throat and that button right here will dispense morphine for you.”
Bo made a signal for writing.
“Oh I will get you something to write on right away.”
She left him again. Bo took an ice chip it felt good on his throat. He didn’t want to take any morphine until he knew what happened to Nora. The nurse returned with a pad and pen.
“Here you go Mr. Buchanan.”
Bo wrote Nora’s name.
“Nora Hanen? Oh is she the woman who was with you.”
He nodded.
“Let me get the doctor.”
Bo felt fear, if the nurse wouldn’t tell him maybe she didn’t make it. The doctor showed up several minutes later.
“Mr Buchanan the nurse just told me you were asking about Ms. Hanen.”
He nodded.
“She is alive, but she still has a long fight. She was in much worse shape than you when they got you here.”
Bo took the pen again and wrote. The doctor read it.
“Not for a couple of more days, you need to be more stable before you can leave this bed and see her.”
Bo wrote again. The doctor read it.
“Yes, I will keep you informed on her.”
Bo relaxed a bit, he nodded. The doctor left. Bo ate a few more chips then press the morphine button. He felt himself fall asleep again.
